Not all cracking points to footing movement. Understanding symptoms versus causes.

How to read cracking as evidence rather than as a diagnosis, and what each pattern usually indicates.
A crack records a movement that has already happened. Our task is to work backwards from the record to the mechanism, using the geometry of the crack and the geometry of the building together.
We look for consistency. A single mechanism usually produces a family of related cracks across a structure. When the cracking does not form a coherent pattern, there is often more than one thing occurring.
Where the evidence remains ambiguous, monitoring and targeted opening-up resolve it far more cheaply than a precautionary structural upgrade.
