Strengthening is often faster, cheaper and less disruptive than replacement — but only when the existing capacity is properly understood.
The decision hinges on how much of the existing structure can be relied upon. Testing, material sampling and analysis frequently reveal more residual capacity than the original documentation suggests.
Strengthening also preserves embodied carbon, planning approvals and tenancy continuity — three things that rarely appear on a structural drawing but almost always appear in a client's business case.
Rebuilding remains the right answer when the geometry, condition or performance requirements simply cannot be reconciled. The point is to make that call on evidence.
