Structural Engineering For Sydney’s Existing Buildings.

Sheer Force Engineering is expanding into Sydney. We are structural engineers who specialise in buildings that already exist — the ones with incomplete drawings, unexpected movement, heritage constraints and a new use waiting to be unlocked.

Our Sydney office opens in 2026. Until the doors are open, our engineers are already available for Sydney and wider New South Wales projects, working from our established Melbourne practice and attending site in person.

If you have a building in Greater Sydney that needs investigating, strengthening, adapting or defending, we would be glad to talk now.

01How We Help In Sydney

Structural investigations and condition reports

Cracking, movement, water ingress, corrosion and deterioration assessed on site, with a clear view of what needs action now, what needs monitoring and what is simply a symptom of something deeper.

Heritage structures

Sydney holds one of Australia’s oldest building stocks — sandstone, early brickwork, cast iron and unreinforced masonry. We identify what must be preserved, what can be adapted, and where modern intervention can be introduced sensitively.

Adaptive reuse and change of use

Warehouses, offices, terraces and industrial buildings reworked for new purposes, starting with what the existing structure can genuinely carry rather than what a drawing claims.

Forensic engineering and expert opinion

Independent structural investigation and evidence for owners, owners corporations, insurers and legal teams when the cause of a defect or failure is contested.

Remediation and strengthening

Concrete cancer, corrosion, façade defects, balcony and slab issues, and capacity upgrades where floor loads, additional levels or new plant are proposed.

Temporary works and demolition engineering

Propping, façade retention, staged demolition and sequencing for constrained inner-city sites where neighbouring structures and access govern the method.

02Why Sydney

Sydney’s existing building stock is unusually layered. Colonial sandstone sits beside Federation brickwork, mid-century concrete frames and 1990s apartment construction, often on the same street and sometimes in the same building. Each era brings its own structural assumptions, its own materials and its own failure modes.

That layering is exactly the work we do. Our practice was built on structures already standing: understanding how they were made, how they have aged, and how far they can be pushed before a new use becomes uneconomic or unsafe.

Expanding into Sydney lets us do that work alongside the owners, architects, builders and legal teams who need it most, in person and on site.

03Working Across New South Wales

From the Sydney office we service Greater Sydney, Parramatta and Western Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Illawarra, and we travel for regional NSW projects where the building warrants it.

Our engineers work within the National Construction Code and the relevant Australian Standards, and we are experienced in coordinating with heritage consultants, councils and certifiers where approvals depend on the structural argument being clear and well evidenced.

04What To Expect

We start by listening to the building. A site attendance, measured observations, whatever documentation exists, and where necessary targeted testing — reinforcement scanning, concrete coring, material testing or timber grading through trusted specialists.

From there you get a considered position rather than a hedge: what the structure is doing, why, what your realistic options are, and what each one is likely to cost you in complexity and programme.

We would rather tell you something is simpler than you feared, or harder than you hoped, than leave you with a report that avoids the question.
