Overview

The Old Footscray Town Hall is one of Melbourne's most significant civic heritage buildings. Completed in 1936 and recognised for its distinctive architectural character, the building has long served as an important landmark within Melbourne's western suburbs. As part of the broader Maribyrnong Civic and Community Precinct redevelopment, the Town Hall underwent extensive restoration and adaptive reuse works designed to return the building to active community use while preserving its historic significance.

Sheer Force Engineering was engaged by the contractor and demolition team to provide temporary works engineering and demolition sequencing advice for some of the most challenging structural interventions within the heritage building.

The Challenge

The adaptive reuse works required the removal of several significant load-bearing masonry walls within the existing building.

As is common with heritage structures of this era, the masonry walls formed an important part of the building's structural system. Removing substantial portions of these elements created complex temporary stability challenges that required detailed planning and engineering assessment before demolition could proceed.

The project team needed a solution that would allow major modifications to occur while maintaining the stability of the surrounding heritage structure and minimising risk during construction.
